I was thinking of something cool to write about. Something interesting. Something funny. You know the style of thing. I understand, Dear Reader, that you are a discerning reader. Looking for writing that satisfies you on many levels. So I put my thinking cap on for you. And what I came up with was, essentially, a nice cold sazerac. Then a couple more. Now I’m in no fit state to write anything. So, because I like you and want the best for you, I’m giving you two things.

Firstly, my recipe for a sazerac which you should try. It’s a cheeky little drink from New Orleans which I know you, as discerning people, will adore.


  • 1.5 oz rye whiskey (I recommend Jameson 1780)
  • 1.5 oz Cognac (I recommend Remy Martin vsop)
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • Peychaud bitters to taste
  • absinthe
  • lemon twist for garnish
    1. Chill an old-fashioned glass by filling it with ice and letting it sit while preparing the rest of the drink.
    2. In a separate mixing glass, muddle the simple syrup and Peychaud bitters together.
    3. Add the rye whiskey and ice to the bitters mixture and stir.
    4. Discard the ice in the chilled glass and rinse it with absinthe  by pouring a small amount into the glass, swirling it around and discarding the liquid.
    5. Strain the whiskey mixture from the mixing glass into the old-fashioned glass.
    6. Garnish with a lemon twist. The lemon twist should be squeezed over the drink to release its essences but that the twist should not be dropped into the glass itself.
